Conserving Your Poster Collection

Originally, posters were designed for outdoor publicity of certain events in the European continent. These were prominent advertising tools during the 1890s. A desirable and genuine form of art, posters mirror the various periods of great artistic age from Art Nouveau to Art Deco and have extended to the period of Modernism.

These days, however, posters are more than just media mileage tools. Collecting of original posters of an assortment of movies and shows, sports and their teams, and all entertainment icons are among the most eminent hobbies.

With modern technology, posters collected by enthusiasts are found in their wide range of sizes, subjects, colors and designs. Most commonly, posters come as enlarged photos of various subjects of interest, but there are also hand-drawn posters. To some, collecting posters is merely a fad and common only among teenagers who root for artists in all aspects of entertainment. But expensive or affordable, posters sell largely in all markets. Evidently, posters are getting a huge following, surpassing age, gender and social strata.

The collection of posters is increasing in popularity, but these pieces are not only to be rolled up and kept in drawers. In fact, most entertainment and sports fans' rooms are filled with at least one poster expressing the collectors' liking.

The best quality and most costly posters are of limited supply, with an appreciating value over time, thus it is significant to preserve these items. A collector has to keep in mind the key factors, which determine the value of posters which include rarity, condition and popularity of the featured artist or event, among others.

All collectors want their posters to last a lifetime, if possible. Hence, shrugging off the concept of preservation might just be a heftier price to pay.

A majority of collected posters hang on the room walls of their enthusiastic collectors, but for pricey posters, preserving this investment is of key importance. Gurus of the hobby of collecting say that posters are best preserved when glass-framed. This is most especially applicable to the most expensive and exclusive posters that come in protective acid-free linen.

Collectors should be aware of posters' most common foe which is acid. Posters are valuable pieces of paper for collectors. Knowing where posters should be placed, especially when unframed, should take top priority to lengthen their lifespan. Acids from household cleaners and other similar solutions can practically devastate treasured paper pieces in seconds.

The "wrong light" also counts as one of the worst enemies of beloved poster collections. While collectors gaze at their posters pinned on ceilings or walls, the damaging ultraviolet light penetrating the valuable paper collectibles serves as threats. Collectors are advised to keep their pieces away from direct sunlight and not directly through windows.

The wind, as harmless as it may seem, can cause damage to posters, especially because it brings with it pollutants, such as dust that come from outside.

However, poster collection continues to grow, and businesses relating to this hobby continue to increase in number. For as long as aficionados exist, experts foresee the demand for posters to always remain.
